As leaders of the No Kill Movement on Maui, we are thrilled to let our supporters know that 9th Life Hawaii sponsored the VERY FIRST NO KILL Conference in the entire state of Hawaii. We were the honored hosts of the three leaders of this movement. Our goal was for these three No Kill leaders to inspired our community to emulate their success:  Guest Speakers were: Nathan Winograd who created the first No Kill community in Tompkins County, NY and now heads the San Francisco-based No Kill Advocacy Center; Ryan Clinton, Appellate Attorney, co-founded No Kill Austin (Texas) which became the largest No Kill community in America in 2011 with a 90% save rate at its open-admission shelter and Diane Blankenburg, Community Programs/Development Director of the Nevada Humane Society, also an open admission shelter.

The Nevada Humane Society takes in more than twice the national average per 1000 people and has a 91+% save rate for both dogs and cats. Nevada Humane Society has become a national model. We hope to be the same for our great state of Hawaii!  The Guest Speakers and No Kill leaders who attended are shown below. A heartfelt Thank You to everyone who participated, it was a huge success!

This book review is about: "Friendly Fire” by Nathan Winograd and Jennifer Winograd. (Paperback version is now available from Amazon.com)
I loved this book. I have read all 3 of Nathan Winograd's books and "Friendly Fire” packs a walloping punch. It is his best book by far. This book goes behind closed doors and although the truth is not pretty, as animal lovers and as tax payers who fund these shelters and for the misguided donors to PETA, the Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA, we need to know the truth. Friendly Fire is a must read for animal lovers.
There is a way out of the killing of thousands and thousands of animals in our local municipal shelters which are usually and incorrectly called "HUMANE" societies. There is nothing HUMANE about killing healthy or treatable animals. For example: At the Maui Humane Society, newborns without mothers are killed because they cannot eat by themselves. Could you imagine if we used that same logic for human beings?
It is time to square off against the organizations that call themselves HUMANE and who rake in hundreds of millions of dollars annually and kill their rescues, like PETA. These organizations say that to kill is humane. It is not humane. It is the final abuse. The Humane Society of the United States and the ASPCA dump thousands of their rescues on the overcrowded nearby shelters, who then must kill animals in their own shelters to make room or kill the "rescues".
What do the big three do with all their money? Well, it is NOT about saving lives. It IS about pouring money into advertising so they can get even more donations. It is about maintaining the status quo and keeping the bureaucracy in place where CEO's can make $150,000 or more a year, plus fees for their "humane" speaking engagements. Read their Federal form 990's (Federal form open to the public) and see where the money goes.
If you love animals, you must read this book. There is a way out of the killing. And it starts by utilizing Nathan Winograd's NO KILL EQUATION. If you don't believe NO KILL is possible, start by checking out these websites; www.nokilladvocacycenter.org or check out the Nevada Humane Society, an open-admission shelter, which has been NO KILL for years.
PLEASE SEND THIS ON TO YOUR ANIMAL-LOVING FRIENDS AND FAMILY.

Monthly donations are so VERY important. They enable us to budget our expenses. Donations are always needed as we have at least 200 cats at the sanctuary on any given day. 9th Life cats are well fed and we treat every treatable illness. They receive the best medical care, pest control treatment and lots of love always.. And remember your ENTIRE donation goes to help the cats because we are run strictly by volunteers. NO ONE RECEIVES A SALARY. You can set up monthly or make an individual donation through this link .....

CORPORATE/BUSINESS & COMMUNITY SECTION

9th Life Hawaii would like to take this opportunity to thank Petco Foundation for a most generous grant towards our Spay/Neuter clinics which should enable us to sterilize more than 600 cats. For their ongoing support and grants towards our high-volume, pediatric Spay/Neuter clinics. Our current clinic ends March 2, 2011 and our next clinic sponsored in part by Petco will be in the Spring of 2011. Dates to be announced. We look forward to a long, successful partnership with the Petco Foundation that will enable us to compassionately and non-lethally bring about a decrease in the cat population on Maui. We are also hopeful that Petco will open a store here soon so we can augment our adoptions in one of their stores. It’s a bit much for us to take the kitties to the mainland to showcase our kitties in one of Petco’s adoption clinics. So, if you think a Petco on Maui is a good idea (we certainly do) please click here to visit their Petco Foundation website, and let them know. And once again, a big MAHALO to Petco Foundation for their ongoing support.

All of us at 9th Life Hawaii (including over 200 cats and kittens) want to thank the Iams Dog & Cat Food Company for donating 2 pallets of cat food. That's a LOT of food. It is truly a blessing to have such high-quality food donated and we are grateful. Our special needs cats (those with medical or digestive problems) do especially well on Iams and so we truly appreciate this donation. We note ease of digestion and much needed weight gain amongst cats suffering from digestive problems. We salute you Iams for your generosity. Your product makes a difference!

9th Life Hawaii is Maui’s largest, non-profit, No Kill Cat Rescue & Sanctuary. As of April 1, 2015, we have sterilized more than 6,800 cats and have monthly spay/neuter clinics to humanely reduce the cat population. We actively embrace No Kill. We never take the easy way out. When a cat needs medical attention, it receives medical care. When cats need special diets, they receive their special food. We have many special-needs cats from one-eyed cats to 3 limbed cats, to cats dealing with kidney failure or cancer. They all receive the special care they need. They are not "euthanized” because their care got expensive. We ask you to think about these issues when considering donating to an animal rescue group. We truly are an animal RESCUE group and we need your support to help the kitties. Small or large, all donations help.

KITTEN SEASON ALL YEAR ROUND

It seems in Hawaii we are always knee deep in kitten season, since our seasons barely change. We always have lots of adorable adoptables of all ages, and colors available. Many of our kitties can be viewed at petfinder.com

If after viewing our kitties, one or more of them wrap their paws around your heart, please call us (808-866-3049) for directions to the sanctuary where you can meet hundreds of adoptable kitties. All visits to the sanctuary are by appointment as we do not have a large enough staff available every day.

9th Life has rescued many orphan bottle babies including newborns. Your donations help us to save these precious lives. Having been raised by humans, these "bottle bablies" are especially loving towards people and make great pets.

Donations can be mailed to 9th Life Hawaii - Box 476 - Makawao, HI 96768. Donations can also be made with a credit card if you have a PayPal account.

Below is Timmy, my newest office assistant.

We have many old cats (late teens to twenty years of age). A goodly number spent their entire lives at 9th Life where they received quality care, great food and medical attention when needed. We thank our donors for enabling us to provide well for these cats. As more and more of our older kitties need specialized care, we are happy to announce that the Senior Retirement Villa is complete.

We also work closely with tourists who want to "Take a Furry Reminder of Maui Home with Them". We can provide carriers and discounted vet certificates for airline travel. We have sent quite a few Maui kitties to the mainland in 2014, like the two below:

MEET 9th LIFE HAWAII'S FLYING CATS

9th Life Hawaii is thrilled to announce a new adoption partnership with "Every Creature Counts" a sister No Kill rescue in Ft. Lupton, Colorado. They have adopted out over 44,000 cats and dogs since 1992. We transported our first group of six kitties on the evening of March 26th via American Airlines. They arrived safe and sound the following morning and American Airlines did a fabulous job of coordinating the trip. Three of the kitties have already been adopted. We will be flying kitties to Every Creature Counts as often as our finances allow. Here is how YOU can help.

We need carriers that latch with screws and bolts (plastic or metal) and they must be large enough for the cat to turn around and stand up in. You can find really good deals on Petco or PetSmart online and Amazon.com when they run their specials. We found some really inexpensive DOG carriers at Petco online that meet American Airlines criteria for cats. The X-small, (SKU # 881619) is big enough for a full grown cat and the small carrier (SKU # 1080253) is big enough for our really large cats. These are labeled dog kennels but obviously work just as well for kitties.

Here is a link for Kennels/Carriers at Petco.com
http://www.petco.com/products/11074/Petco-Classic-Kennel.aspx?CoreCat=OnSiteSearch

We also need food and water bowls that attach to the carriers and puddle pads to place inside each carrier. These items can be sent directly to 9th Life Hawaii at the address below. If you choose to do this, please let us know as sometimes the packing slips does not tell us the name of the sender and we do want to THANK YOU. Must importantly, we needmonetary donations to cover airfare and vet travel certificates which average over $200.00 per cat. The annual cost to care for a cat at our santuary is greater than $200.00 a year AND many of our cats were born here and never adopted out. This new adoption program though costly to implement will save us money in the long run AND will allow us to rescue and provide sanctuary for more cats in the vacated spaces. This program will save lives. If you choose to send a monetary donation for the Meowy from Maui transport program, please reference that on your check.

There simply are not enough adopters on Maui to provide loving homes for the thousands and thousands of homeless, abandoned kitties on our island, so 9th Life Hawaii began looking to the mainland for help. We are thrilled at this new partnership but only with YOUR help can we expand it. The more cats we adopt out, the more cats we can take in (and save). The kitties below are now in Colorado. Three of them have been adopted already.

Senior Retirement Villa

Volunteers standing by the ladder: From left to right: Keola Sequiera, Jerry Piller, Paul Takayama, Conrad Engleke (behind Paul), Bill Immarino and John Hara. Not shown is Rodney Jung who along with Jerry Piller also put the special "cat proof” fencing up around the Senior Retirement Villa.

This special area will enable us to keep all the older kitties in one place where we can easily monitor their health. Again, we thank our supporters whose donations helped us purchase this large shed which we are using as a cattery. We are also grateful to all the volunteers who put it painstakingly together (It came in pieces like a Lego set.) and installed the fencing. A big MAHALO to you all.  Many of the seniors have compromised kidney function. The more water they drink, the better they will feel and the longer they will live.  We would like to put in a few Pet Fountains that supply a free-falling stream of water. This entices the cats to drink more keeping them healthy and hydrated.  You can find these fountains at Petco, Petsmart, Amazon.com and other pet loving retail stories.  These fountains work with submersible pumps so we would need a cat-loving electrician to donate his/her time to bring electricity to the Seniour Retirement Villa.  If interested in helping, please call our main line.  (808) 572-3499.

Spay & Neuter Clinics

9th Life Hawaii has now sterilized about 6,800 cats, most of them in our very own fully-equipped surgery room. We are holding monthly clinics. Call our spay/neuter line: (808) 866-3050 for information and the dates of our clinics. You can also print out a surgical consent form by clicking on the link on our website for Spay/Neuter. The form must be mailed back to us at PO Box 476, Makawao, Maui, HI 96768. We are here to help.

If you would like to volunteer call (808) 572-3499 or contact us via email at 9thlifehawaii@9thlifehawaii.org.
Donations can be mailed to 9th Life Hawaii - Box 476 - Makawao, HI 96768. Donations can also be made with a credit card if you have a PayPal account.

We are presently providing shelter for just under 300 cats. These cats receive the best of care, special foods and vet care when needed and because we are NO KILL, they will continue to receive five star care and medical care as needed. We do not euthanize an animal because its medical care has become expensive. We cut no corners. We only euthanize if an animal is suffering, the pain cannot be managed and/or there is absolutely no hope of recovery. EVERY treatable illness is treated. Never doubt for a moment: Your donations save lives every single day at 9th Life Hawaii.

We also encourage you to sign up for our newsletters which frequently mention our door prizes. One lucky gentleman was the winner of a week’s vacation at a luxurious Maui condo. We can also accept vehicles online through Donation Line, LLC and we always need gift certificates for our auctions. And of course, monetary donations always help.
